Welcome to 3WD Reflections. To provide some context for what you’ll find here, I thought it would be useful to share what we went through when naming the company. This painful process forces you to articulate succinctly your corporate profile, market position, target audience and the perceptions you want to leave your audience with. Most people pay someone to do this for them because it’s hard. I took it on myself to save money. But in doing so I was able to clarify the topics I intend to reflect on here. It also laid the foundation for developing our presentation materials and elevator pitch.
At the end of the day, it all boiled down to 3 Ways Digital: Community, content and monetization strategies for businesses seeking growth from the Web. What I will post about will be learnings from my client projects and observations I make while practicing in the digital media marketing world. I’ll also give you my take on industry trends and share info on the people who are inspiring me.
Now back to the naming process. Of course great ideas have to be grounded in reality and for me, reality was whether the .com domain name was available. 95% of the time when I’d conduct a domain name search, it wasn’t available. I did so many domain name searches (and subsequent purchases to “hold” the domain) while things were evolving, that GoDaddy started sending me all sorts of special discount offers. I purchased about twenty domain names that were candidates but after sleeping on them, none were quite right.
Here is the list of names we considered so you can have a chuckle. This list illustrates the descriptive words we considered attempted to incorporate into the name . I have grouped them by the reasons why they didn’t work, but I’m sure you’ll be able to see that the wheels were churning;-).
Too Cutsie | Likely to be Spelled Incorrectly | Too Narrow |
Too Hard to Remember | Spelled it Wrong when I Bought it | Domains Not Available |
Not Descriptive Enough | What was I Thinking? | |

I’m sure you get the idea. The name 3 Ways Digital ultimately came to me in my sleep once the three different areas of digital media marketing that our business would focus on became clear.
I look forward to capturing my work and thoughts here. We have a couple exciting client projects that will launch shortly and will share details with you soon!
